BACOLOD City – Residents of Sitio Pangpang, Barangay Alijis in Valladolid, Negros Occidental showed their “Bayanihan” spirit in making a temporary bamboo bridge as an alternative to the steel bridge that collapsed over the weekend.
According to Mark Cabrillos of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, people can pass through the bamboo bridge, but were advised to be cautious to prevent any accident.
Motorized vehicles still have to use an alternative route in the neighboring town of San Enrique and La Carlota City.
The steel bridge, which was believed to be 50 years old, collapsed on Saturday after a 10-wheeler wingvan truck loaded with 470 sacks of soya beans exceeded the 5-10 metric tons load limit of the bridge for vehicles.
Truck driver Ramon Oplas from Iloilo City alleged that he was not familiar with the place.
He was supposed to deliver the soya beans to the town that day.
The truck owner has already signified to construct the bridge at the village.
