Retired faculty member Prof. Roman Sanares opened his one-man painting exhibit last 14 August 2023 as part of the Goldies Day celebration. Sanares featured a collection of 30 paintings, which he created in a span of three years, including the pandemic season.
The artworks highlight the artist’s ever-evolving style, from his classic naturalistic strokes to the emerging hybrid naturalistic-impressionistic style and purely impressionistic style. The dominating themes of Sanares’ artworks include the mother and child, farmers, fishermen, flowers, and Philippines huts.
Situated at the UP High School in Iloilo lobby, the intimate gathering turned into a meaningful reunion of alumni, retired members of the faculty, University officials, and friends. Present during the event were Chancellor Clement Camposano, Vice Chancellor Philip Ian Padilla, Office of Alumni Relations Director Dr. Rey Carlo Gonzales, Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts Director Prof. Martin Genodepa, Office of Student Affairs Director Prof. Agustin Huyong, College of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Alice Joan Ferrer, UPHSI Principal Prof. Edelia Braga, retired Principal Dr. Lourdes Zamora, and former UP Alumni Association Iloilo Chapter President Mr. John Cañonero, among others.
The exhibit is the artist’s tribute to his alma mater, UPHSI, which will also be the beneficiary of 50% of the exhibit proceeds. The amount raised will be turned over to iAmUPHi in support of the UPHSI Library Project.
The class of Sanares, UP Iloilo High School Class of 1968, is the co-presenter of the exhibit along with iAmUPHi. The class is currently celebrating its 55th Emerald Jubilee.
Adding flavor to the festive mood of the occasion was the reading of the poem titled “Children of Pihay,” written by Sanares’ classmate Dr. Marie Melanie J. Javier. The poem was read by former UPHSI Principal Prof. Alfredo Diaz. (Ms. Gerthrode Charlotte Tan-Mabilog, IPO)
