Seasoned with Determination

Emelita W. Nieves, 57, a CARD Bank client and entrepreneur from Mercedes, Camarines Norte, proved that everything is within reach for someone with determination and perseverance.

Success is not measured by how many times you fall, but by how many times you rise. This belief defines the journey of Emelita Wee Nieves—a woman who transformed challenges into opportunities.

Emelita embodies perseverance and determination. From selling dried fish on a small scale to becoming a thriving entrepreneur in the smoke fish industry, her story is one of resilience, hard work, and an unshakable commitment to growth.

A challenging start

Emelita started selling dried fish with a small capital in 2006. Despite her efforts, profits remained low. By 2015, she had to put the venture on hold. Though dispirited, she refused to let failure define her path.

Two years later, in 2017, Emelita and her husband took a different approach, venturing into the smoked fish business. Determined to learn from past challenges, they refined their processes and focused on building a sustainable enterprise. Their hard work quickly bore fruit.

Like many entrepreneurs, Emelita faced life’s challenges, such as financial hurdles. However, with the support of CARD Bank, a microfinance-oriented rural bank, she secured loans—starting with PHP 5,000 and eventually increasing to PHP 500,000—which played a vital role in stabilizing and expanding her business.

Growth and community impact

Operating from Mercedes, Camarines Norte, a town known for its seafood products, Emelita’s smoked fish gained recognition for its freshness and distinct flavor. Wholesalers and retailers from Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Albay, and Catanduanes became loyal customers. The rise in online ordering boosted sales, which allowed her to expand her market reach.

From essential tools, Emelita acquired three trucks, a jeep, and necessary equipment to support production. More importantly, she was able to provide jobs for her community, many of whom she considers family.

With commitment and passion, Emelita now employs 43 workers. She ensures their well-being by offering fair wages, free meals, giveaways, and financial assistance in times of need. Emelita finds fulfillment in empowering others through employment, especially women seeking to support their families.

Emelilta’s determination and perseverance earned recognition as one of the leading trailblazers in entrepreneurship. On December 11, 2024, she was honored with the Gawad Maunlad Micro National Winner at the Pagkilala sa Mga Likha ni Inay Awards, organized by CARD Mutually Reinforcing Institutions (CARD MRI). The event recognizes entrepreneurs who have significantly contributed to their communities and the economy.

From humble beginnings, Emelita has transformed her small venture into a flourishing business. Her success has secured her family’s future and enabled her to acquire a home, vehicles, and other properties she once only dreamed of.

With a clear vision for the future, Emelita is focused on expanding production, reaching new markets, and creating more job opportunities for her community. For her, success is not just about financial gain, it’s about leaving a meaningful, lasting impact on the lives of others.

“Just like the smoked fish seasoned with determination, our business adds flavor not only to our customers’ tables but also to the lives we touch along the way,” she concluded.
