BACOLOD CITY – Police are investigating two possible motives—personal grudges or a love triangle—in the killing of a security guard who was gunned down by an unidentified motorcycle-riding assailant in Barangay Handumanan last Wednesday.
The victim was identified as Arnold Caballes, 37, a resident of Barangay Cabug.
According to Police Capt. Glenn Montaño, head of Police Station 10, Caballes was taking a shortcut on his motorcycle on his way home when the gunman suddenly appeared and chased him along a rough road around 5 p.m.
Witnesses reported that Caballes pleaded for his life, but the assailant shot him. Despite his attempts to crawl into a grassy vacant lot, the gunman fired again.
The victim sustained three gunshot wounds to the hand and body and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Montaño revealed that they have identified a person of interest in the case. He noted that Caballes had recently been involved in a misunderstanding related to a personal transaction, though details remain undisclosed.
Additionally, Montaño said Caballes had a prior altercation with a man who had shown interest in his live-in partner.
“We are focusing our investigation on these two angles to determine the motive behind the killing,” Montaño stated.
He also confirmed that Caballes was a former soldier, although no further details were provided about his military background.
