Senate considers suspension of PUV modernization

In a hearing of the Committee on Public Services on Tuesday, July 23, Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero expressed his willingness to adopt a resolution calling for the temporary suspension of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).

The Senate President pointed out the lack of consultation and proper planning with the transport and PUV sectors, even during its implementation by the previous administration.

“I firmly believe that the majority of senators support the suspension of this modernization program. Therefore, instead of a proposed law, we can immediately pass a resolution expressing the sense of the Senate calling on and urging the President to temporarily suspend the program,” Escudero said.

Senator Raffy Tulfo, Chair of the Senate Committee on Public Services, also noted that the program was rushed and that it needs thorough deliberation before full implementation.

Senator Escudero added that the financing scheme and other unresolved issues regarding the program’s implementation need to be addressed first before imposing it on the public transport sector.
