SHS students begin work immersion at ISUFST Tiwi

Twenty-eight senior high school students from Anilao National High School and San Joaquin School of Fisheries began their 10-day work immersion program at Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) on Monday, March 4.

This annual program reflects the schools’ commitment to collaborating with the Department of Education to foster the career and academic growth of their students.

The students were welcomed by the university community during the flag ceremony and attended an orientation organized by the Office of International Affairs and Linkages. Experts from various departments, along with representatives from Student Affairs, the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, and the Research Office, provided guidance.

After a comprehensive campus tour, the students were assigned to different offices, labs, and stations to start their hands-on learning experience, under the guidance of their coordinators, Mr. Raul Panada from Anilao and Mr. Romeo Garcia from San Joaquin.

During the orientation, Prof. Grace Bunda, the Director of Student Affairs and Services, stressed the significance of engaging fully in the immersion to develop essential skills and knowledge for their future careers.

Julius Ruger Hermano, representing the Office of International Affairs and Linkages, warmly received the students and their coordinators, encouraging them to take full advantage of the learning opportunities at ISUFST.

Dr. Jescel Bito-onon, the Research Director, also provided career advice, highlighting the importance of research, fisheries technology, and marine biology as potential career paths, especially as ISUFST is recognized as a Center of Development in these areas.

The work immersion program at ISUFST Tiwi is designed to give students hands-on experience in their fields of interest, preparing them for their future endeavors. The institution anticipates a productive and enriching experience for all participants during the program. (Text by Herman Lagon; Photos by Julius Ruger Hermano and Herman Lagon)
