Singapore-based electro-pop singer, songwriter, and producer Shye has released her newest single “ITIM” today. The song uses distortion and fuzz to perfectly convey its message – how overthinking can mess up your thoughts and create a blur. Fans can stream “ITIM” here!
“‘ITIM’ (I Think I Might) is about how we can drive ourselves crazy by overthinking. It embraces the sense of freedom that comes with being finally comfortable enough in our own skin to take chances and to take the wheel,” explains Shye. “Although I personally LOVE distortion in general, I hadn’t ventured into it much because it’s hard to control and things can get messy really fast. However, I decided to give it a shot this time and go out of my comfort zone. It was super fun!”
While “ITIM” is her second single of 2021 (following June’s “not rly”), the 19 year old artist has been busy making waves all across the country – singing on Singapore’s National Day Parade 2021 theme song “The Road Ahead” and being a participating artist in the new reality series Hometown Heroes, featuring musicians from all over Singapore.
Notably, Shye’s first single of the year “not rly” has swept streaming platforms in Asia, landing on Spotify‘s coveted New Music Friday playlists across 8 countries in Asia, .ORG, Indie Shuffle, and Jasmine playlists as well as the cover spot for Spotify’s Rising 65 playlist. She was also added to KKBOX‘s 西洋速爆新歌 (New International Music) and Apple Music‘s New Music Daily playlists. Shye looks forward to the releases she has lined up for the second half for 2021.
Shye is a 19-year-old DIY producer/ singer-songwriter and full-time student who creates her own magic in her bedroom. Introverted by nature, the process of self expression is both comforting and exhilarating and has helped to draw her out of her shell.
Happy to stray away from the script, Shye writes her own rule books as she goes along. Forging her own path, pushing her own boundaries and creating comfort zones for her own convictions, she strives to stay true to herself and create a sound that’s uniquely Shye. She hopes her brand of electronic-pop has something different to offer to listeners, that it not only entertains but makes them feel understood.
A strong proponent of artistic ownership, Shye prioritises taking the lead on the creative processes behind her work to ensure that her music is intimate and a true reflection of her feelings, personality, and experiences. This strive for relatability and authenticity for her listeners is a big factor behind her decision to remain an independent artist this far on her journey, and among the many reasons that her audience continues to grow steadily in the region.
After winning Vans Musicians Wanted in 2018 at the age of 16, this “accidental” musician has been blazing through the music scene, racking up recognition and awards along the way. From winning the “Best Song to Unwind to” award in the Youth Music Awards 2019, Shye’s 2020 debut album ‘days to morning glory’ impressed and won “Album Of The Year” for the Youth Music Awards 2021, with the album also landing a spot on NME’s The Best 25 Asian albums of 2020. Most recently, Shye clinched the top spot for “Best New Artiste” at the 14th Freshmusic Awards. Despite global setbacks to the field of live performances due to the pandemic, Shye’s notable appearances include Mediacorp Let’s Celebrate 2021 (alongside Jason Derulo, Benee, Conan Gray, Jeremy Zucker), TedxSingaporeWomen, regional festivals such as Urbanscapes, Bangkok Music City and Baybeats, as well as opening for Clairo, SALES, and Superorganism.
Shye’s music has been added to airplay on major radio stations in the region such as 98.7FM (SG), KISS 92 (SG), POWER 98 (SG), Asia Pop 40, Volare Radio Pontianak (ID), and Gajah Mada FM( ID). She has been featured on both local and regional outlets including Rolling Stone India, Mothership, FEMALE Magazine, MTV Asia, NME Asia, Buro Singapore, Esquire Singapore, and MSN Philippines.
Shye’s interest in fashion has seen her collaborating with brands such as Celine, Chanel, Gucci, Longchamp and she has been featured in Pomelo Fashion and Uniqlo campaigns along with her original music. Shye was also the cover girl for the June edition of FEMALE magazine.
