DESIDERIO C. Gange National High School (DCGNHS) in Sibunag, Guimaras topped the recent 2019 Guimaras Statistics Quiz contest provincial elimination round held at the Provincial Covered Gym in San Miguel, Jordan.
The contest is in preparation for the 2019 National Statistics Month (NSM) celebration themed “Data Innovation: Key to a Better Nation.”
DCGNHS represented by Zyd Reic G. Mallorca, Christian F. Galvan and Carl Justine M. Gallego, dominated the final round of the contest.
In second place are Buenavista National High School’s Mark Hendrix Lapac, Dan Shiegfred Tellermo and Lonbelle Jan Gabayeron.
The students of Remedios E. Vilches- San Lorenzo National High School, Sheree G. Bayoneta, Khazel Mae N. Cordero and Rachelle G. Sauquillo, landed in third place.
The judges were Mercy Joy V. Nagtalon, Information Officer I of the Statistical Operation and Coordination Division-Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Region VI; Prof. Rodrigo Paglomutan of Guimaras State University; and Dr. Cherry T. Nepomuceno, Director of West Visayas State University Learning Center (chief judge).
All participating students and their coaches were given certificates of participation while students who topped the contest received Php1,000 cash each and certificates of commendation.
The second and third placers received the same certificates with cash prizes of Php700 and Php500, correspondingly.
“The top 2 winners will represent Guimaras in the Regional Statistics Quiz contest in October in support to the 30th National Statistics Month,” said Nelida B. Losare, Provincial Statistics Officer (PSO) of PSA-Guimaras.
Losare also stressed in her message that the activity aimed to enhance and instil nationwide awareness and appreciation on the importance and value of statistics.
Moreover, she added that the theme for the 2019 NSM emphasizes the importance of data and evidence-based policy formulation to uplift the lives of the Filipino people.
“This is the third time that the Provincial Government of Guimaras through its Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO), together with the Department of Education Schools Division of Guimaras and the Provincial Statistics Committee (PSC), currently chaired by the PSA-Guimaras, spearheaded the conduct of the activity,” Losare said.
Jaypee Kein Entredicho, Executive Assistant IV of Gov. Samuel Gumarin, delivered the latter’s message during the opening program.
The message highlighted the importance of data, recalling that the province conducted the Provincial Statistics Quiz competition since 2017 with the aim of discovering and honing the statistical capabilities of students in Guimaras.
