In the spirit of the holiday season, Iloilo City’s streets have transformed into vibrant marketplaces as sidewalk vendors set up shop in designated areas.
The city government allowed this initiative through Executive Order No. 159, permitting open sidewalk vending from December 18 to 31 to accommodate the holiday rush and provide vendors with an opportunity to boost their livelihoods.
Specific streets and public spaces, including Iznart Street, J.M. Basa Street, Valeria to Delgado Streets, Jaro Plaza, and Molo Plaza, have been designated as open vending areas under the order.
As of December 18, over 80 vendors have secured permits to participate.
Jessy Inocencio, a resident of La Paz, shared how the sidewalk markets bring convenience, allowing her to save time and effort.
“Prices are more affordable compared to malls, which is a big help for us parents managing a budget,” she said.
Joel Reyes, who visited the J.M. Basa Street vending area, praised the initiative as beneficial for both consumers and vendors.
“For us consumers, it’s convenient to find unique items and fresh produce without traveling far. For vendors, it’s a chance to earn extra income during the holidays,” he emphasized.
To ensure order and safety, the city’s Public Order and Safety Management Office and Task Force on Anti-Squatting and Illegal Structures Unit regulate vendor activities, verify compliance with special permits, and maintain clear pedestrian pathways.
The city’s traffic management unit also held an engagement meeting with sidewalk vendors on December 13 to discuss the executive order and its guidelines.
This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to supporting local businesses while providing residents and visitors with a festive and accessible shopping experience during the holiday season.
