Upland communities in Leon and Alimodian towns are now safer and more accessible, thanks to the continuous construction of slope protection structures by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office recently completed a slope protection structure along the Junction Bancal-Leon-Antique Boundary Road, specifically in Barangay Ayabang, San Miguel.
Citing a report from District Engineer Mario G. Soriano, DPWH Region 6 Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel stated that the structure will protect roads and nearby communities from potential hazards such as landslides and falling debris.
“This portion of the national road is very susceptible to landslides and rock falls, especially during heavy rains, posing risks to commuters and residents,” Oropel said. “This improvement is vital to preserve lives and properties in the area.”
Oropel emphasized that the slope protection structure will ensure road accessibility at all times, allowing uninterrupted transportation and cost-efficient delivery of agricultural products from the uplands to markets.
He also noted that the project will facilitate faster delivery of medical and essential services to remote areas.
District Engineer Soriano added that the slope protection structure will enhance access to various tourist destinations, boosting local tourism development.
“This road section connects to the Bucari Pine Forest in Barangay Bucari, Leon, known as the ‘Little Baguio’ of Iloilo province, and other destinations in Alimodian such as Imoy Falls and the ‘Seven Cities,’ renowned for organic vegetable production,” Soriano said.
Ensuring road connectivity is crucial for local tourism and agriculture, Soriano stressed, adding, “We must ensure that national roads, particularly in highland areas, remain free from falling debris and erosion to provide a smooth and continuous flow of traffic, especially during heavy rainfall.”
The PHP 96.496-million project, funded under the FY 2023 Regular Infrastructure Program, includes the construction of the slope protection structure, a drainage system, a bridge, and other miscellaneous structures. (DPWH)
