Soldier Hacked to Death by CAFGU Member in Capiz

ROXAS CITY, Capiz – A Philippine Army soldier was killed after being hacked by a member of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 26, in Barangay Jaena Sur, Jamindan, Capiz.

Police identified the victim as Technical Sgt. Reynaldo Bueron Montinola, 49, of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

The suspect was Larry Mariano Torreblanco, 37, a CAFGU member and resident of Barangay Jaena Sur.

According to an investigation by the Jamindan Municipal Police Station, the victim and the suspect went to a fishpond where they worked.

Minutes later, residents heard someone shouting for help.

Responding residents found Montinola lying on the ground with multiple hack wounds, while Torreblanco stood beside him with a bolo tucked in his waist and hack wounds on his stomach and neck.

Residents rushed Montinola to Sen. Gerry Roxas District Hospital in Dao town, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The suspect was taken to Roxas Memorial Provincial Hospital for treatment.

Police are still investigating the motive for the attack.

Meanwhile, Col. Erwin Rommel Lamzon, chief of the 3rd Division Public Affairs Office, said Montinola’s body was brought to Iloilo for autopsy.

He added that the military has coordinated with the victim’s family to provide financial support.
