Philippines-based basketball club Strong Group Athletics threw bold allegations following their shocking semifinal loss over Tunisia during the Dubai International Basketball Championship on February 2, 2025.
In a game where the stacked Strong Group was heavily favored, the Tunisian squad spoiled the majority’s expectations and pulled off a stunning 68-63 victory that formally eliminated the remaining Philippine representatives.
However, it wasn’t a graceful exit for Strong Group as the management claimed that ‘officiating consistencies’ cost them a ticket to the grand finals in Dubai.
Hours after Strong Group’s loss, the management aired their frustrations and stated: “Throughout the game, multiple non-calls were made against us, with crucial decisions favoring Tunisia.”
With only 4.4 seconds left and Strong Group trailing by three points, 66-63, Rhenz Abando had the chance to equalize the ball game when he attempted a three-pointer at the top of the key.
It was then at that moment that the whole Strong Group team including the management bursted when they felt that Abando was fouled at the back while going up for the trey.
The official social media pages of Strong Group even posted the clip of Abando and received several comments that their game against Tunisia was a ‘cooking show.’
“Despite the obvious contact, the referees failed to call a foul, effectively sealing Tunisia’s victory and ending our championship hopes. As competitors, we respect the game and its governing principles. However, fairness and accountability are fundamental in maintaining the integrity of international basketball,” wrote Strong Group.
Strong Group was looking to seal their cinderella run after erasing Tunisia’s 16-point lead but things didn’t go their way in the most crucial stretch of the ball game.
As a result, Strong Group announced that they would be withdrawing from the tournament and will not be playing in the bronze medal game.
“Our decision not to play in the third-place match is not just about one game—it is about advocating for officiating that upholds the spirit of sportsmanship and ensures that all teams are given a fair chance to compete. We extend our gratitude to our supporters and assure our fans that despite this unfortunate outcome, we remain committed to representing the Philippines with pride on the global stage,” Strong Group closed.
