Sweden and the Philippines are expanding their collaboration in key sectors, including infrastructure, public-private partnerships, and disaster resilience, following a high-level visit by Swedish officials.
State Secretary to the Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Diana Janse and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) Director General Jakob Granit led a delegation to the Philippines from Feb. 25-27, 2025.
During the visit, Swedish officials met with key counterparts from the Departments of Finance, National Defense, Foreign Affairs, Transport, and Information and Communications Technology, as well as the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) in Clark, to strengthen ongoing partnerships.
Janse also attended the signing of a new grant from Swedfund, Sweden’s development finance institution, to support public transportation development at the Department of Transportation.
In Clark, Swedish officials engaged with representatives from the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation to explore disaster resilience initiatives.
Ericsson Response, the disaster relief program of Swedish mobile connectivity provider Ericsson, presented its Government Emergency Communications Service-Mobile Operations Vehicles (GECS-MOVE). Ten of these specialized vehicles have been deployed nationwide to ensure fast and effective emergency response.
Swedish officials also met with BCDA representatives to express support for the Subic-Clark-Manila-Batangas Freight Railway Project. Sweden is assisting the Department of Transportation with technical expertise through Swedfund.
“We are determined to continue building a deep and long-lasting partnership with the Philippines. In addition, Swedish companies are investing in the country, contributing to job creation and technology transfer,” Janse said during her visit to the Swedish consumer electronics and engineered soft goods company OSM Group in Clark.
OSM Group has chosen to expand its operations in the Philippines due to the country’s skilled workforce and plans to increase investments in 2025.
Sweden is a global leader in technological innovation, security and defense, connectivity, healthcare, sustainable mining, and infrastructure. The country invests approximately 3.5% of its GDP in research and development through public and private sector initiatives.
As part of its commitment to sustainable growth, Sweden, through Sida, signed a $200 million guarantee agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The guarantee will enable ADB to expand investments in climate change initiatives across Southeast Asia, including the Philippines.
