Teen Shoots CAFGU Father in Iloilo

By Jennifer P. Rendon

A 17-year-old boy allegedly shot and killed his father, a Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) member, on the morning of January 26 in Bingawan, Iloilo.

The suspect, identified as Renz, was in tears as he was surrendered to the police following the incident.

According to reports, Claudio, 55, had just returned from fetching water from a nearby well around 7:30 a.m. when the attack occurred.

Armed with his father’s .38-caliber revolver, Renz was reportedly waiting at the stairs.

He allegedly shot Claudio in the lower back and chest.

Claudio was rushed to Tapaz District Hospital in Tapaz, Capiz, but was pronounced dead at 8:15 a.m.

Lieutenant Philip Girao, chief of Bingawan police, said the incident may have stemmed from a prior conflict between the father and son.

“It appears the father physically hurt the boy as a form of corporal punishment,” Girao said.

Two days before the shooting, Claudio had admonished Renz for neglecting his chores due to excessive use of his gadget.

A frustrated Claudio reportedly grabbed Renz’s head and pushed him against a wall.

Girao added that Renz, a Grade 10 student, may have harbored resentment toward his father following the altercation.

Renz, the youngest of four siblings and the only son, was reportedly remorseful and sought forgiveness from his family.

He has since been placed in the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for proper handling of his case.

Authorities continue their investigation into the incident.
