With less than a week until election day, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas urged educational institutions to maintain neutrality during politically charged times.
“We firmly believe that institutions of learning must remain bastions of truth, fairness, and objectivity, especially in times when public trust and democratic processes are being tested,” said Joy Fantilaga, spokesperson for Treñas.
The mayor issued the statement after a non-commissioned political survey was conducted by Integrity Iloilo, a group reportedly composed of former professors and graduates of the University of the Philippines Visayas College of Management.
The survey showed Team Sulong Gugma vice mayoral candidate Love Baronda leading by 7 percentage points over incumbent Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon, who is running under Treñas’ Team Uswag.
In response, the UPV College of Management issued a statement on April 30 distancing itself from the poll.
“The college remains a non-partisan institution and does not endorse, support, or participate in any political activities carried out by its alumni or former colleagues,” it stated.
The college reiterated its commitment to academic neutrality and institutional integrity, noting that political views or actions by alumni or former faculty do not represent its official position.
“We sincerely hope for a peaceful and orderly process as the nation approaches the upcoming elections,” the statement added.
Fantilaga praised the college for its “courage and integrity” in clarifying its position and disassociating from political activities of former members.
She also said Treñas respects the college’s stance on maintaining academic neutrality and institutional integrity.
The mayor called on the Iloilo City community to ensure the elections remain free from misinformation, undue influence, and partisan manipulation.
“We echo the call for a peaceful and orderly election,” Treñas said.
“Let the voice of the people be heard clearly, and may it usher in leadership that truly reflects the will of the people,” he added.
