BACOLOD CITY – A tricycle driver died in a hospital hours after being hit with a stone and robbed along the Bacolod Economic Highway in Hacienda Gonzaga, Barangay Mansilingan on Monday, Jan. 29.
The victim was identified as Edmund Tolosa, 38, of Barangay Taculing, Bacolod City.
Police Capt. Dax Santillan, chief of Police Station 7, said Tolosa was found wounded in the grass beside the highway 10 hours after the attack, which occurred around 2 a.m.
Authorities located the victim after the suspect confessed to the crime and led police to the crime scene.
The suspect, a 37-year-old man identified only as alias “Almer” from Barangay Mansilingan, was tracked down in Bago City, Negros Occidental, where the stolen tricycle was also recovered.
Santillan said Almer flagged down Tolosa at a supermarket in Barangay Mansilingan early Monday.
However, upon reaching the Bacolod Economic Highway, the suspect allegedly attacked the driver, leaving him wounded before stealing the tricycle and fleeing to Bago City.
Bago City police later coordinated with Police Station 7 after learning about a motornapping incident, which led to the arrest of the suspect.
Charges of robbery with homicide were filed Tuesday against the suspect.
Police Col. Joeresty Coronica, director of the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), urged drivers to assess their passengers before accepting fares to ensure their safety.
