TUP-V Student Wins Negros Occidental PSQ Championship

BACOLOD CITY – The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) – Negros Occidental Provincial Statistical Office spearheaded the 28th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) Provincial Eliminations on October 23, 2024, at the Auditorium of Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod.

The PSQ is an annual competition aimed at assessing the proficiency of freshman college students in the field of statistics. Twenty-one college freshmen from seven colleges and universities in the province competed in three tightly contested rounds, each with 10 questions. Participants came from Binalbagan Catholic College (BCC), Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (CHMSU), Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod (CSA-B), State University of Northern Negros (SUNN), Technological University of the Philippines-Visayas (TUP-V), University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R), and University of St. La Salle (USLS).

Resh S. Garcia, a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering student from TUP-V, emerged as the champion. He received a specially designed plaque of recognition and a cash prize of PHP 5,000, while his coach, Engr. Kevin Claveras, was awarded PHP 3,000.

Second place went to Charles Lawrence Benares, a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology student from CSA-B, and third place to Chrysler Anthon Jayme, a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering student from CHMSU. They received plaques of recognition and cash prizes of PHP 3,000 and PHP 2,000, respectively. Their coaches, Mr. Eduardo Jr. M. Bacodio, MAED from CSA-B, and Engr. Romeo V. Desabella from CHMSU, also received PHP 3,000 and PHP 1,000, respectively.

Fourth place was awarded to Mariz Ashley Salavante, a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy student from USLS, while fifth place went to Rodjean Borrero, a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering student from TUP-V. Both received PHP 1,000, and their coaches, Mr. Chard Aye R. Alova, PhD from USLS, and Engr. Kevin Claveras from TUP-V, received PHP 500 each.

All participants and their coaches received certificates of participation.

The top three finalists will represent Negros Occidental in the 28th Philippine Statistics Quiz Regional Eliminations on November 8, 2024, in Iloilo City. Regional winners will advance to the national finals, representing the Western Visayas region.

The board of judges included Mr. Rey Palacios from St. Joseph School-La Salle, Ms. Diane Matess D. Briones from Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School in Silay City, and was chaired by Ms. Jessamine Calma, PhD from Negros Occidental High School. Ms. Rochelle Sacudit from the PSA-Negros Occidental facilitated the quiz and served as the quiz master.

Despite the ongoing typhoon and suspension of classes, Dr. Randdie P. Cuelo, Vice President for Academic Affairs at CSA-B, graced the event to welcome the participants and deliver an inspirational message. PSA’s Supervising Statistical Specialist Ms. Diesah S. Biaoco and Senior Statistical Specialist Mr. Jerome C. Cadayona expressed their gratitude to the participating schools for their continued support of the annual PSQ.
