BACOLOD CITY – Two criminology students died after their motorcycle crashed into a parked truck loaded with sugarcane in Barangay Talaban, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, on Thursday night.
The victims, identified only as “John,” 21, and “Jasper,” 23, were both residents of Barangay 3 and third-year college students.
Police Lt. Col. Anthony Grande, head of the Himamaylan Police, said the victims were riding a motorcycle driven by John when they collided with the truck.
According to the truck driver, the vehicle was parked in the area due to mechanical trouble, but no early warning device was set up.
Grande speculated that the victims might not have noticed the truck because the area was poorly lit.
He added that the two may have been speeding, as their motorcycle went under the truck due to the impact.
Neither victim was wearing a helmet, and both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The truck driver fled the area out of fear but surrendered to the police on Friday morning.
Both parties have had an initial discussion, but the victims’ families have yet to decide whether to file a case against the driver.
