The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has upgraded the Iloilo City-Leganes-Dumangas Coastal Road to ensure faster and more convenient access to the Roll-On Roll-Off (RoRo) port, which also serves as an alternate route to northern Iloilo towns.
DPWH Region 6 Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel said the asphalt overlay on this road section is essential for maintaining the road surface, improving aesthetics, enhancing durability, and reducing preventive maintenance costs.
“Asphalt paving is cost-effective and ensures the longevity and durability of the pavement. Adding a new protective layer will significantly extend the lifespan of the existing road,” Oropel said.
He added that the asphalt overlay will provide a smoother and more comfortable driving experience for motorists, especially those heading to the Dumangas RoRo port and trucks transporting goods in and out of Iloilo City and the province.
Oropel also noted that applying asphalt will reduce vehicle wear and tear, restore the road’s ability to handle heavy traffic, and improve riding quality and road noise levels.
The ₱39.19-million project, funded under the 2023 Regular Infrastructure Program and implemented by the DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office, involved asphalt paving of a 5.13-lane kilometer stretch, particularly in the Sta. Barbara section.
District Engineer Mario G. Soriano said the asphalt road is vehicle-friendly and offers a smoother driving experience.
“This upgraded road will increase the mobility of people, goods, and services, boosting the economy and improving access to basic services,” Soriano said.
He added that asphalt roads provide benefits such as cost efficiency and reduced noise pollution, improving the experience for all road users and benefiting the environment. (DPWH)
