The UPV Seaweed Laboratory, in collaboration with the Provincial Agriculture Office of Iloilo (PAO), held training on establishing and managing seaweed nurseries for farmers in northern Iloilo.
The training took place on Nov. 20-21, 2024, at the New Beach Head Resort in Barosbos, Carles, Iloilo.
More than 35 participants attended the two-day event, which featured lectures and hands-on activities aimed at introducing recent innovations in seaweed farming. Participants also learned to fabricate culture trays used in sea-based nursery trials.
Dr. Iris Ann G. Borlongan, team leader of the UPV Seaweed Laboratory, served as the resource person, discussing Eucheumatoid farming practices in the Philippines.
“This event is crucial for us to adapt to climate resilience. I see this opportunity as favorable for the sustainability of the seaweed industry,” one participant said.
The training was identified as a key area for capacity development during the Provincial Agriculture and Fisheries Extension System (PAFES) consultation.
