The UPV University Library, led by University Librarian Ms. Analiza Galang-Linaugo, was honored with a complimentary copy of “It Is Time to Come Home: New and Collected Poems” by renowned poet Dr. Marjorie Evasco-Pernia. The book was presented on April 20, 2024, during the Iloilo Mega Book Fair at SM City Iloilo, North Point.
Dr. Evasco delivered a lecture on “Reciprocal Listening: Writing and Reading Poetry,” sharing insights into the poetic process and emphasizing the importance of attentive silence and focusing on ideas rather than objects. “Listening is one of the arts of writing,” she noted, ending the session with a recitation of Denise Levertov’s “Oh Taste and See!”
Assistant Professor Noel Galon of the UPV Division of Professional Education and a co-founder of the IMBF, shared his memorable first encounter with Evasco’s poetry and its significant influence on his literary appreciation. The event concluded with a book signing and a photo session with Dr. Evasco.
A distinguished literary figure from Maribojoc, Bohol, Dr. Evasco serves as Professor Emeritus of Literature and University Fellow at De La Salle University, Manila. Her accolades include the Carlos P. Garcia Award for Literature (2011), NCAA Ani ng Dangal (2011), the South East Asian Writers’ Award for poetry (2010), and several others. Her works have been widely published and translated into various languages.
“It is Time to Come Home,” a 416-page collection, features poems from Dr. Evasco’s earlier books, now out of print. The book, designed by Felix Mago Miguel, was published by Milflores Publishing, Inc. in partnership with De La Salle University Publishing House.
National Artist for Literature Gemino H. Abad praised Dr. Evasco in the foreword for remaining true to her heritage and connecting deeply with her audience.
