UPV MEd ESL students lead seminar on educational supervision

Second-year Master of Education in English as a Second Language (MEd ESL) students from the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) organized and conducted the first session of a two-part seminar series titled “The Congruence of Supervision and Leadership: Keys to Effective Institutional Management.”

The event took place on July 13, 2024, at the Graduate and Continuing Education Building (GCEB) Training Rooms 1 and 2 on the UPV Iloilo City campus.

The seminar, offered free of charge, was attended by 100 teachers and education students from both the private and public sectors. This initiative is part of a class project for the MEd ESL II students enrolled in the EDL 261 course (Supervision of Bilingual Education).

Selected students from the class also served as resource speakers.

The first day’s theme, “Supervision: Tasks, Challenges, and Opportunities,” featured Dr. Shena Faith M. Ganela, Director III of the Philippine Science High School Western Visayas Campus, as the guest speaker.

Dr. Ganela’s talk was followed by a lecture on “Developing Curriculum and Organizing for Instruction” by Ariane O. Panigbatan, also from the Philippine Science High School Western Visayas Campus.

Diverse Perspectives on Educational Supervision

The afternoon sessions included various lectures:

  • Lucile B. Solacito from Sta. Barbara Central Elementary School spoke on “Providing Staff, Facilities, and Materials.”
  • Ma. Criselda A. Donasco of Banate National High School discussed “Arranging for In-Service Education and Orienting Staff Members.”
  • Joysa Mae O. Arban of Northern Iloilo State University Lemery Campus delivered a session on “Relating Special Pupil Services.”

Each lecture was complemented by workshop activities, allowing participants to share their experiences and insights from their teaching contexts.

Upcoming Session and Future Goals

The second session of the seminar series is scheduled for July 27, 2024, and will focus on “Pre-and In-Service Leadership and Supervisory Roles.”

Dr. Myrna B. Libutaque, Assistant Chief of the Curriculum and Instruction Division for Student Affairs at the Philippine Science High School Western Visayas Campus, will be the guest speaker.
