Dominic Thiem, the current World number 4, was upset by unseeded Thomas Fabbiano of Italy in just four sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Thiem, one of the young sensations in the sport today was off to a shaky start and was bullied on the baseline by the Italian throughout the game.
The disappointing performance from Thiem was capped off with 48 unforced errors, one of his worse performances of his career.
The Austrian Thiem showed signs of life as he was able to steal the second set behind his consistent groundstrokes and his aggressive netplay.
During the third and fourth sets, Thiem began to deteriorate, starting to serve double faults and miss wide open forehands.
Fabbiano took advantage of the situation as he was able to hurt Thiem with his deep passing shots, wearing the Austrian down.
Theim wasn’t the only high seeded player who was dropped down the US Open in the first round as Stefanos Tsitsipas, the World no. 8 was also knocked down early.
Fabbiano will advance in the second round and will face Alexander Bublik of Kazahkstan.
