THE University of San Agustin (USA), through the Center for Heritage and Indigenous Cultures (CHIC) under the Office of Research and Global Relations, has recently created an institute for two Western Visayan music legends, National Artist Jovita Fuentes and piano virtuoso Jose Maria Contreras, who both hailed from Roxas City, Capiz.
The First Jovita Fuentes & Jose Contreras (JFJC) Music Institute is set to conduct the workshop, “Linking the Art of German Lied and Filipino Kundiman” on August 20-24, 2019 at the USA Campus and the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA).
Music enthusiasts are in for a treat as master classes will be taught by renowned artists such as Prof. Kevin McMillan, a specialist in vocal pedagogy/German Lied, and Prof. Camille Lopez Molina, a voice expert who will discuss in depth the commonalities between the Filipino kundiman and the Lied. Dr. Clement B. Acevedo, Artistic Director of the JFJC Music Institute and the Director for CHIC will speak on piano writing in song repertoire. The life and legacy of Ms. Fuentes and Mr. Contreras will be shared by family members and former students.
The music workshop consists of 20 hours of masterclasses, lectures, student recitals, concerts, and open forum/dialogue.
The public is welcome to pre-register at http://www.jfjcmusic.weebly.com/apply.html. For more information, please contact the Director for CHIC at +639177980315. (USA/jag)
