Veteran Health Workers Champion Resilience, Service in Rural Communities

In Quezon Province, two remarkable women—Emerita and Rhodora—embody the strength, compassion, and perseverance of the country’s community health workers (CHWs), despite personal hardships and limited resources.

Emerita, 60, a breast cancer survivor, has served as a CHW in Macalelon for 32 years and currently leads all CHWs in her municipality. Even through chemotherapy and radiation, she chose to stay active in her role, finding purpose in helping others. Her leadership during health emergencies and calamities, along with her advocacy for better training and support for CHWs, reflects her unwavering dedication to her community’s welfare.

Rhodora, 65, a widow and long-serving CHW in Barangay Rizal, Macalelon, has worn many hats over nearly three decades—including daycare worker, nutrition scholar, and senior citizens leader. Despite receiving only a modest honorarium, she continues to train new health workers, organize community health programs, and push for proper supplies and government support. Her story underscores how passion and perseverance can drive impact, even in the face of financial and logistical challenges.

Both women are shining examples of grassroots leadership, proving that age and adversity are no barriers to building healthier, more empowered communities. Their stories call for greater recognition and systemic support for CHWs nationwide.
