After a promising sophomore start in the NBA, San Antonio Spurs’ young franchise player Victor Wembanyama was just shut down for the remainder of the season announced on February 21, 2025.
Wembanyama was diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder which was discovered when the French stalwart arrived in San Antonio after playing in the NBA All-Star festivity.
According to Mayo Clinic, deep vein thrombosis happens through the presence of a blood clot forming in one or more deep veins in the body.
Deep vein thrombosis can cause severe pain and swelling, in the case of Wembanyama, in his right shoulder.
Due to the high chance of bleeding and other complications, athletes who received an assessment regarding this condition are highly advised to stay away from high-impact activities and will have to undergo medication.
The tagged “Best Prospect” in the sport of basketball is currently having a stellar season, averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.8 blocks, 3.7 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.
Before getting ruled out by San Antonio, Wembanyama was able to suit up for 46 games and helped the Spurs reach their 23rd win of the season.
Playoff expectations were immediately put to the franchise after the Spurs acquired Sacramento Kings’ superstar floor general De’Aaron Fox to team up with Wembanyama.
Now, those talks are about to evaporate as Fox will have to carry the Spurs’ ship on his own, along with the franchise’s promising young talents in Keldon Johnson, Stephon Castle, and Jeremy Sochan.
Prayers up, Wemby! Come back stronger the next season!
