Visayas Container Terminal boosts efficiency with new cranes

The Visayas Container Terminal (VCT), a key cargo-handling facility operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) in Iloilo, has significantly upgraded its operations with the introduction of two state-of-the-art ESP.5 Konecranes Gottwald mobile harbor cranes (MHC).

These cranes, the largest and first of their kind on Panay Island, are expected to elevate port operations in the region, improving efficiency and safety.

Each crane boasts a maximum reach of 46 meters and a top lifting capacity of 100 tons, making them capable of handling increased volumes of containerized, bulk, and general cargo in Panay and the wider Region 6.

With the addition of these cranes, VCT anticipates quicker turnaround times for vessels and trucks, enhanced safety, and overall better operational performance.

“These cranes are game changers for the Visayas market. We are excited to integrate them into our operations just five months after VCT commenced commercial activities at the Iloilo Commercial Port Complex,” said Timothee Jeannin, VCT’s executive director.

The new equipment is part of VCT’s commitment to provide world-class services in the Visayas. As part of this initiative, VCT has also invested in its personnel, sending teams to Manila International Container Terminal and South Pacific International Container Terminal in Papua New Guinea for specialized training in crane operation and maintenance.

“We monitored the production of these cranes from the first day since we ordered them, ensuring that they are made according to our specifications,” said Gareth Scott, ICTSI’s equipment procurement and commissioning director.

In addition to the new cranes, VCT is undergoing several other improvements, including dredging along the terminal’s berths to accommodate larger ships, upgrading the container yard, and enhancing engineering facilities.

Plans also include the development of multipurpose spaces for employees as part of the terminal’s continued efforts to modernize.
