In a pivotal move to bolster the country’s tourism sector, the Department of Tourism (DOT) unveiled its industry roadmap for the Visayas region in Iloilo City on Friday, April 5.
Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco led the launch, emphasizing the National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) 2023-2028’s primary goal.
The plan sets ambitious targets, aiming to employ 6.3 million Filipinos by 2028, accounting for roughly 12.9 percent of the nation’s total employment. It also projects substantial growth in international visitor arrivals, starting at 7.7 million this year and aiming for 11.5 million by 2028. The expected contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) by 2028 is forecasted at 14.01 percent.
“The NTDP is not just a plan, but a dynamic framework that demands active engagement from policy formulation to grassroots execution,” Frasco highlighted in her speech.
“Our objective is to energize an industry vital to millions of Filipinos and to showcase the Philippines’ essence,” she added.
Developed through a nationwide collaborative effort, the NTDP included inputs from various sectors, establishing a detailed strategy for the Philippine tourism industry’s growth and transformation.
Frasco conveyed her confidence in the NTDP guiding the sector to triumph over challenges, calling for renewed dedication to the vision of making the Philippines a leading tourism destination in Asia.
Governor Arthur R. Defensor, Jr. of Iloilo also expressed robust backing for the initiative, declaring readiness to work alongside the DOT and other national agencies.
The event was attended by a host of local dignitaries and officials, signaling a united front in the advancement of the region’s tourism and economic development.
