Voters Must Demand Power Choice Now

The upcoming election presents a critical opportunity for residents of Iloilo’s first district to secure their energy future. As candidates seek support from constituents, voters must demand clear positions on the expansion of MORE Electric and Power Corporation (MORE Power) into their communities.

The recent Supreme Court decision affirming MORE Power’s right to expand its franchise has opened new possibilities for consumer choice in power distribution. This ruling, combined with the company’s successful expansion into other districts, makes it clear that the status quo of exclusive distribution rights is no longer inevitable.

The real challenge now is political will.

Electricity is not just another commodity; it is a fundamental driver of economic growth, business stability, and household welfare. High electricity rates and unreliable service affect not only daily living expenses but also the competitiveness of local industries and small businesses. With MORE Power offering lower rates and better service in its existing franchise areas, it is only logical for first district consumers to demand the same benefits.

First district residents currently face a stark disparity in electricity costs compared to their neighbors. While communities served by MORE Power benefit from consistently lower rates, first district consumers remain locked into higher rates with their current provider, ILECO 1.

The BNB 101 Association’s resolution calling for MORE Power’s expansion reflects a growing frustration with this inequity. When municipal leaders from seven towns unite behind such a cause, it signals a pressing need for change that candidates cannot ignore.

Representative Janette Garin’s initial positive response to the expansion proposal – noting that “more providers” and “competition is very much welcome” – is encouraging. However, voters should press for specific commitments and timelines, not just general statements of support.

The benefits of expansion extend beyond mere cost savings. Competition in power distribution typically drives improvements in service quality, infrastructure investment, and customer responsiveness. These improvements become particularly crucial as the region’s power demands grow with economic development.

Energy security and affordability are fundamental to economic growth and quality of life. Voters must seize this electoral moment to transform their power situation from a perennial complaint into a decisive campaign issue.

Candidates seeking office must understand that their positions on power distribution will significantly influence voter decisions. The electorate’s message should be clear: concrete action on MORE Power’s expansion will be a crucial factor in earning their support.

Voters must hold their representatives accountable. Will Rep. Garin and other local officials actively work toward giving first district consumers a choice in their power provider, or will they continue to sidestep the issue? Election season is the perfect time to demand commitments from candidates and ensure that energy affordability and supply reliability become legislative priorities.
