The total fisheries production of Western Visayas in the third quarter of 2023 was estimated at 87,661 metric tons.
The production decreased by 3.9 percent or about 3,554 metric tons less from the same quarter of 2022’s reported volume of production.
The decrease was attributed to the commercial and municipal fisheries sectors with negative 9.4 percent and 9.6 percent, respectively.
On the other hand, aquaculture fisheries increased by 1.5 percent.
Of the region’s total fisheries production, aquaculture fisheries shared 54.1 percent.
Municipal fisheries, which includes marine and inland subsectors, contributed 23.4 percent, while commercial fisheries contributed 22.5 percent. (See Figure 1)
Regional aquaculture fisheries volume of production in the third quarter of 2023 increased by 1.5 percent
Two provinces of the region, contributed to the 1.5 percent increase in the region’s aquaculture fisheries production in the third quarter of 2023 from the same quarter of 2022. Capiz with a share of 50.4 percent to total production, increased by 0.1 percent, and Antique with 38.0 percent share increased by 44.7 percent. On the other hand, Negros Occidental with 5.2 percent share decreased by 59.2 percent; Aklan with 2.7 percent share decreased by 40.2 percent; Iloilo with 2.6 percent share
decreased by 14.0 percent; and Guimaras with 1.2 percent share decreased by
34.6 percent. (See Figure 2 and 3)
Marine Municipal Fisheries Volume of Production in the third quarter of 2023 decreased by 8.5 percent
Compared to third quarter of 2022, the region’s marine municipal fisheries production in the same quarter of 2023 decreased by 8.5 percent or lower by about 1,840 metric tons. Iloilo with 13.4 percent share to the total production decreased by 60.8 percent. Antique with 13.0 percent share posted a decrease of 33.9 percent, and Capiz with
12.3 percent share posted a decreased of 0.6 percent. On the other hand, Negros
Occidental, the top producer province, with 46.7 percent share posted an increase of 65.1 percent, and Guimaras with 4.2 percent share increased by 6.1 percent.

Inland municipal fisheries volume of production decreased by 35.4 percent
The region’s inland municipal fisheries production posted a 35.4 percent decrease or about 338 metric tons from 957 metric tons in the third quarter of 2022. Aklan with
22.7 percent share posted a decrease of 51.7 percent; Negros Occidental with 19.5 percent share decreased by 59.7 percent; Iloilo with 8.0 percent share decreased by 31.0 percent; and Antique with 5.1 percent share decreased by 0.5 percent. On the other hand, Capiz sharing 41.6 percent of the total inland fisheries volume of production increased by 1.9 percent, and Guimaras with 3.1 percent share increased by 69.0 percent. Commercial Fisheries Volume of Production decreased by 9.4 percent
In the third quarter of 2023, commercial fisheries production of Western Visayas shrunk by 9.4 percent or about 2,055 metric tons lower compared with the third quarter of 2022. All the provinces in the region, except Aklan, contributed the decrease.
Capiz declined by 0.1 percent or about 7 metric tons less compared with the same quarter in 2022. Iloilo with 25.5 percent share decreased by 11.6 percent.
Antique with 20.9 percent share, decreased by 37.7 percent, Negros Occidental with 20.0 percent share also decreased by 1.0 percent.
On the other hand, the production of Aklan with 7.6 percent share to the total commercial fisheries production, increased by 329.3 percent. Among the provinces in Western Visayas, Guimaras is the only province with no commercial fisheries landing center. (See Figures 8 and 9)
Western Visayas’ Fisheries Production valued at 9.28 billion pesos in the Third Quarter of 2023
The total fisheries value of production decreased in commercial and aquaculture fisheries.
With a total value of 9.28 billion pesos in the third quarter of 2023, this is 7.6 percent or about 767 million pesos lower compared to the 10.05 billion pesos value of production in the third quarter of 2022.
Lower prices of commercial, aquaculture and inland fisheries resulted to a decrease in value of production. On the other hand, marine municipal fisheries with 33.7 percent share to the total value increased by 2.0 percent.
In the third quarter of 2023, Aquaculture fisheries had the largest share among subsectors to the region’s fisheries value of production (Figure 10) at 37.8 percent followed by Municipal fisheries with 34.5 percent and commercial fisheries with 27.7 percent. For Municipal fisheries, marine fisheries shared 97.9 percent, while inland municipal fisheries shared the remaining 2.1 percent.
