Transport of products and passengers from Iloilo City to other areas in the country, and vice versa, via the Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) is now faster and more convenient with the widened bridge in Leganes, Iloilo.

The bridge widening project was undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office.

DPWH-6 Regional Director Lea N. Delfinado said the bridge was widened from two to four lanes to complement the widened Iloilo City-Leganes-Dumangas Coastal Road.

The ₱46-million project, funded under the District’s FY 2020 Regular Infra Program, involves the widening of the 60-lineal meter, 2-lane bridge parallel to the existing 2-lane bridge.

It also includes the construction of a 138-lineal meter concrete pavement, curbs and gutter, slope protection and reflectorized pavement markings.

“This road section serves as main route for truckers and haulers delivering products from Ro-Ro Port to Iloilo City and vice versa, hence, the old, 2-lane bridge caused congestion which resulted to slow movement of motorists,” Director Delfinado said.

“With this widened bridge, transport of goods from Iloilo City and Iloilo Province to other areas in the country, and vice versa is now faster and more convenient since the flow of traffic becomes smoother and safer,” she added.

OIC-District Engineer Mario G. Soriano said that other than transport of goods, the widened bridge provides better access to motorists and passengers traveling from Iloilo City and nearby towns to Negros Occidental, Guimaras and other provinces via Ro-Ro ships.

“The widening of the said bridge provides crucial access between barangays, linking works to jobs, goods to markets, and people to essential services. This will result to improved local population’s access to basic services and economic opportunities for an improved quality of life,” Engr. Soriano said. (DPWH-6/RPAIO)
