BACOLOD CITY – A woman died and six others suffered minor injuries after a tricycle they were riding crashed into a truck in Barangay 21, Victorias City, Negros Occidental, last Friday.

Police identified the fatality as Lanlie Mahinay, 56.

Police Captain Genus David, deputy chief of Victorias City Police Station, said the victim and six others, including the driver, were coming from a church and on their way to Manapla town when the driver reportedly lost control of the tricycle and hit a truck.

Mahinay was thrown off the tricycle and run over by the truck, which caused her immediate death, according to David. The truck was on its way to Victorias City proper from Cadiz City.

David said the tricycle driver and his five other passengers, including four minors aged 11 to 15, were slightly wounded.

“The tricycle was considered overloaded, which might have caused the driver to lose control,” David said.

The truck driver was held for custodial investigation for 12 hours and was later released.

The tricycle driver was also released after the 18-hour reglementary detention since no charges were filed against him during inquest proceedings, according to David.

David said charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple physical injuries will be filed against the tricycle driver.
