Capiz placed under state of calamity

ROXAS CITY, Capiz – Capiz was put under the state of calamity following the wrath of typhoon “Ursula” in the province.

In a meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Dec 26, presided by Acting Governor Jaime Magbanua, the Council unanimously approved a resolution to declare a state of calamity due to the impact of the typhoon on Capiceños.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Capiz approved the declaration in a special session on same day.

Based on reports from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office as of 5 a.m. of December 27, Ursula displaced 32,701 families or 138,663 individuals in Capiz.

The report added that 7,023 families or 29,872 individuals took temporary shelter in various evacuation centers in Capiz.

As of Friday, 4,962 families or 21,679 are still in the evacuation centers.

A total of 107 barangays from the 12 towns and city in the province were under water due to the continuous heavy rainfall. As of 8 p.m. of Dec. 26, only 89 barangays are still underwater.

Initial report also indicated that 3,700 houses were totally damaged and 12,553 were partially damaged houses.

Three confirmed typhoon-related deaths with two individuals still missing and 118 injured.

The initial estimated damage on fisheries was recorded at 631,890,417.00 and 5,823.5 hectares on corn and rice plantation.

Reports from the different towns are city here are being gathered for consolidation and final reporting especially on the extent of damage brought about by typhoon Ursula. (PIA-Capiz)
