BACOLOD City – The construction of a steel footbridge and an overflow pavement in two upland sitios in Barangay Macagahay, Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental are underway.

The groundbreaking of the projects on Tuesday was led by Mayor Ella Garcia-Yulo and Vice Mayor Ian Villaflor with local officials.

Yulo told reporters that the two projects are among her campaign promises in the 2019 local elections.

The steel foot bridge, with a project cost of PHP5-million, will directly benefit 80 households in Sitio Lemoncito who are dependent on a banca as their mode of transportation.

To reach the sitio, one must cross a river via the two bancas that are guided by a rope from end to end.

Sitio president Jed Gumban said that the steel footbridge has long been a dream of the residents.

He said it is very difficult for them to go to the poblacion in cases of emergencies especially during nighttime as the banca only ferries passengers during daytime.

He added though that in times of bad weather, the banca operators cease operation and if they do ferry passengers, they charge PHP30 per head instead of the usual PHP5 fare.

Gumban said that aside from Sitio Lemoncito residents, several other sitio residents will also benefit from the project because it will be more accessible for them to go to the poblacion.

Another groundbreaking was also held for an overflow at the Bonbon River also in Barangay Quintin Remo.
