The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-Guimaras Provincial Statistical Office conducted a mangrove planting activity in Brgy. Lawi, Jordan as part of their social responsibility in mitigating climate change and in preserving Lawi Coastal Area.
“As we reviewed our Mid-Year Provincial Performance, we have pending activities that need to be done and the group decided to conduct a social responsibility activity on the 29th day of July which is the mangrove planting so we could be part of the coastal preservation for Guimaras province,” Provincial Statistical Officer Nelida B. Losare said.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) also supported the activity by providing the 200 mangrove seedlings/planting materials, likewise, the Brgy Officials of Lawi extended help by allowing the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced (TUPAD) Workers of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to join in the mangrove planting.
The activity aimed to help bring awareness to the Guimarasnons on the importance of preserving Lawi Bay ecosystem and habitats in the area.
Losare also cited that the planned activity was in line with the local government’s continuing expansion and rehabilitation of mangrove forests in the area.
“Mangroves not only improve water quality and protect the shoreline from siltation, flooding, and storm surge, it also serves as habitat and spawning ground for fish and endangered species, likewise, it provides huge benefits to communities, mainly as a natural defense to high tides and coastal erosions,” she said.
