CITY GOV’T TO CITE EXEMPLARY ILONGGOS

The Iloilo City Government will honor key players in the metropolis’ transformation during the Mayor’s Dinner on August 25 as part of the 86th Charter Day celebration, themed “Trailblazing Ilonggos Leading the Way to Sustainable Progress.”

“This is a way to recognize those Ilonggos who have made significant contributions to the city and continue to inspire its people as role models for them to emulate; Iloilo City has reached greater heights as a result of their recognition,” Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said.

The Diamond Lifetime Achievement Award is bestowed to Ilonggos who made lasting and significant contributions in their field of expertise, demonstrated exemplary dedication, passion, and commitment, and whose achievements have served as an inspiration for others to follow.

The recipients are Iloilo’s son Former Senate President Franklin M. Drilon in the field of Public Service, beloved Ilonggo singer-composer Jose Mari Chan for Arts and Music, and radio founder Dr. Rogelio Florete for Mass Media.

“Sen. Drilon had been in politics for many years, particularly in the executive and legislative departments since 1986 up to 2022; he had been an exemplary legislator. When I was in the Commission on Appointments, I could see several senators going to him asking for legal opinions,” Treñas said.

“Mr. Chan is known for his heartwarming music across the world. I remember hearing his song Beautiful Girl way back in 2004 when we were traveling in Indonesia. Dr. Florete, on the other hand, started a small local radio station in the city that boomed nationwide, expanding in various locations, and made a mark in the media industry – which is why they deserve to be granted the Diamond Lifetime Achievement Award,” the mayor added.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be granted to those who have made significant and sustained contributions to the city’s development, championed the Ilonggos, and gained acclaim for their work.

The awardees are Dr. Alfonso A. Uy, Dr. Henry O. Chusuey, Architect Sergio V. Peñasales, Dr. Engracio P. Cortez, and Chess Grandmaster Eugene Torre, for their outstanding achievements that have not only contributed to the city’s growth and prosperity but have also left a lasting legacy for future generations.
