A college student of Guimaras State University (GSU), main campus, garnered the first-place award in the recently concluded 2023 Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ)—provincial elimination round as part of the 34th National Statistics Month (NSM) Celebration spearheaded by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Guimaras Provincial Statistical Office.
Robelyn P. Galfo, a first-year college student taking up a Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Math, bested all other freshmen participants from GSU’s campuses of Baterna and Mosqueda and the Philippine College of Business and Accountancy (PCBA) held at the Caza Guest House, San Miguel, Jordan, Guimaras, on October 25, 2023.
The second placer Johnna Mae G. Cacho, is a Bachelor in Computer Science student from GSU Mosqueda Campus. The third spot, however, was snatched by Joshua G. Mayola, a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries student from GSU Baterna Campus.
“Two tertiary schools joined the PSQ contest with three college students each from GSU Main, Mosqueda, and Salvador Campuses and three from the PCBA,” Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare said.
Galfo, Lyca D. Jallores, and Louie Dren P. Duran were the participants from the GSU Main Campus; likewise, the GSU Baterna Campus represented by Veverly C. Naudan, Marvin M. Estil, and Galia.
“GSU Mosqueda Campus was attended by Edelyn T. Garque, Kate Justine R. Tacadao, and Cacho, while Karren Joy F. Castor, Lieshel Ann G. Tubilid, and Rhen Clarence I. Mancera were the contestants from the PCBA”, Losare said.
Certificates of participation were given to all the participating 12 freshmen students, while contestants who topped the contest received cash prizes of Php5,000, Php3,000, and Php2,000 with trophies, certificates of recognition, and PSA Memorabilia as tokens.
The top three winners will represent Guimaras in the regional PSQ contest; likewise, regional winners will represent Western Visayas at the national level.
The PSQ is an annual contest designed to test the knowledge of statistics of the students enrolled as freshmen in colleges and universities in the 17 regions of the country.
It aims to assess the competency and skills of students in statistics acquired from the secondary education curriculum; to promote, enhance, and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of science, statistics in particular, among the students; to generate public awareness on the importance of statistics in all development-planning activities; and to win overall support for all government statistical activities.
