The town of San Miguel, Iloilo celebrated the reopening of the San Miguel Bagsakan, the Panay Regional Food Terminal, after a lengthy closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The reopening on Labor Day, May 1, also introduced the “BAGSAKAN App,” a digital platform aimed at enhancing market access for local farmers and producers.

Mayor Marina Gorriceta highlighted the importance of the facility during the reopening ceremony.

“San Miguel Bagsakan provides a vital link between our farmers and consumers. Its reopening is a testament to the resilience and unity of our community,” she said.

The BAGSAKAN App allows consumers to order agricultural products online, integrating traditional jeepneys to manage deliveries. This approach not only facilitates easier access to fresh produce but also supports the local transportation sector, which has been significantly impacted by the pandemic.

The event was marked by various activities, including the signing of commitment by stakeholders to support the facility and the community. A promotional event featuring a P20-per-kilo rice promo was also held, where winners could purchase up to 5 kilos of rice at a reduced price, fostering community participation and support for local agriculture.

“We look forward to continuing our efforts to provide sustainable livelihoods and empower local agri-preneurs,” Mayor Gorriceta said.
