ISUFST professor completes prestigious AIMS Program in Japan

Dr. Herman Lagon, a distinguished mathematics and science professor at the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST), has successfully completed the Asian International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Summer Intensive Program, held at Hiroshima University from August 1-8, 2024.

The program, themed “Future of Higher Learning from Student Perspectives,” brought together 28 participants from across Asia and beyond to explore innovative educational practices and foster cross-cultural understanding.

Dr. Lagon’s participation in the program was particularly notable, as he was among the few participants engaged in graduate studies, being recognized as one of the group’s elders.

The program included students and leaders from diverse fields such as engineering, environmental science, education, and international politics, representing countries like the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, China, Nigeria, and Indonesia.

As part of the program, Dr. Lagon led his team in developing a groundbreaking proposal titled the Free University Microcredential International Hybrid Program. This initiative aims to democratize education on a global scale by making it accessible and free for all who seek to enhance their employability.

The proposal was presented to over 200 higher education leaders from the AIMS network at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Hall, earning praise for its innovation and social impact. CHED IAS Director Atty. Lily Freida C. Macabangun-Milla commended the team’s “excellent” performance.

Reflecting on his experience, Dr. Lagon highlighted the importance of such international exchanges in promoting educational innovation and cross-cultural collaboration.

“This program has been an eye-opening experience, allowing us to exchange ideas and perspectives on the future of education,” he said.

Dr. Lagon’s involvement in the AIMS program marks a significant achievement for ISUFST, as he is the first representative from the institution to participate in this prestigious international initiative.

His nomination was endorsed by the University of St. La Salle (USLS)-Bacolod, where he is currently pursuing his PhD in Educational Leadership.

The AIMS Program, launched in 2010, has enriched the educational experiences of approximately 7,000 students through cross-border collaboration and cultural exchange.

The program’s impact extends beyond academics, fostering regional integration, cooperation, and mutual understanding among the participating countries. (PAMMCO)
