A high-ranking New People’s Army (NPA) member was killed in an encounter with the Philippine Army’s 12th Infantry (Lick-Em) Battalion in Sitio Hilwan, Libacao, Aklan, on Oct. 31.

The deceased, identified as Alvin Panoy, alias Jake/Vinmar, 30, of Lemery, Iloilo, died after a 10-minute clash with government forces.

According to the 3rd Infantry Division, Panoy served as the finance and logistics officer of Squad II, Igabon Platoon of the NPA’s Central Front Komiteng-Rehiyon Panay.

The encounter occurred around 6:28 p.m. on Thursday after troops received information about armed men reportedly conducting extortion activities in the area.

Soldiers recovered an M16 rifle, three magazines, a bandolier, a backpack, and personal items from the scene.

Panoy’s remains were brought to Navejas Funeral Home in Libacao, Aklan, and will be transported to his hometown of Lemery, Iloilo.

Major General Marion Sison, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, stated that the neutralization of a top communist terrorist group (CTG) leader resulted from relentless military efforts and the strong support of local communities in promoting peace in Western Visayas.

“The death of Panoy has disrupted the CTG’s efforts to regain influence in Aklan, including its financial and logistical support systems for both red and white area operations,” Sison said.

He urged his troops to continue serving with courage and integrity.

“Your sacrifices and bravery do not go unnoticed. Each mission strengthens our collective resolve. Let each step be fueled by a firm dedication to safeguarding our communities and establishing Stable Internal Peace and Security (SIPS) in the region,” Sison concluded.
