BACOLOD CITY – The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in Negros Occidental recently conducted city and municipal-level training sessions to help local government units (LGUs) adopt the Philippine Standard Industrial Classification (PSIC) and the Philippine Standard Geographic Code (PSGC).
The training, which aimed to enhance the capabilities of LGU officials in economic reporting and planning, took place in two batches. The first session was held on October 28, 2024, in Bacolod City, with participants from Talisay City, Silay City, Cadiz City, and the municipalities of Manapla, Toboso, Murcia, and Salvador Benedicto. The second batch followed in Himamaylan City, attended by representatives from La Carlota City, Himamaylan City, Kabankalan City, and the municipalities of Pontevedra, Hinigaran, Cauayan, San Enrique, Isabela, and Ilog.
Participants included officials from the City and Municipal Planning Offices, Business Permits and Licensing Offices, and the Treasurer’s Offices. Anna Leah B. Silva, Economic Development and Investment Promotions Officer, shared her insights during the training, emphasizing its importance for preparing comprehensive reports. “This activity will help us immensely in preparing our reports, especially when presenting to local and international investors in the province,” Silva stated.
PSA highlighted the importance of aligning with LGUs to create more granular, comparable, and uniform statistics across the local and national levels. This alignment supports consistent data collection and reporting, which is essential for informed planning and development.
The PSIC is a comprehensive classification system that categorizes industries based on the types of productive activities carried out by establishments. This allows for more precise reporting and analysis of economic activities. The PSGC, on the other hand, provides a standard coding system for geographical-political subdivisions, such as regions, provinces, cities/municipalities, and barangays, ensuring uniformity in statistical data collection and reporting.
By equipping local government officials with the knowledge and tools for using these standards, the PSA aims to strengthen data-driven decision-making and planning across Negros Occidental.
