A fisherman was taken into police custody after allegedly shooting and killing a man who reportedly tried to assault him and his brother-in-law on the evening of Jan. 8 in Tigbauan, Iloilo.
The suspect, identified as Roque Toroy, a resident of Barangay Barroc, Tigbauan, was arrested more than an hour after the incident.
Police reports stated that the victim, 48-year-old Nestor Templo, also a resident of Barroc, initially attacked Toroy’s brother-in-law, known only by the alias “Cute.”
According to police, Cute was waiting for a friend at a store when Templo arrived.
A brief confrontation ensued, during which Templo allegedly grabbed a piece of wood and tried to hit Cute.
Capt. Alfred Mansoy, Tigbauan police chief, said Templo and Cute had longstanding grudges.
Templo was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Toroy, who lived near the store, attempted to pacify the fight before returning home to retrieve a gun.
Later, as Toroy accompanied Cute on his way home, they encountered Templo again.
Templo allegedly ran after them with a bolo, prompting Toroy to shoot him once.
Templo sustained seven pellet wounds to his abdomen.
He was rushed to the Rep. Pedro Trono Memorial Hospital in Guimbal but was declared dead on arrival.
Police arrested Toroy at Cute’s house around 10 p.m., although the firearm used in the shooting was not recovered.
Capt. Mansoy said criminal charges would be filed against Toroy on Friday.
