CFOS Holds Symposium, Fellowship For Non-Teaching Staff

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) held a symposium and fellowship for its non-teaching personnel on December 10, 2024 at the Pidlaoan Hall, CFOS, University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) Miagao campus.

The activity, which was organized for the first time, featured a talk titled “Mindful Communication for Workplace Well-being” delivered by Mr. Jhio Jan Navarro, faculty member of the Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, UPV.

Administrative staff, REPS, and project-based personnel were welcomed by Dean Prof. Dr. Harold Monteclaro. The dean underscored the significance of the activity for the well-being of the participants.

A registered psychometrician, Navarro discussed how mindful communication, which he defined as being aware of what you or your colleagues are saying and the how you or they are saying it, can contribute to workplace well-being.

He also presented how feedback and complaints, the two common types of communication in organizations, might affect interpersonal relationships and well-being.

Navarro likewise taught the participants how to give constructive feedback, recognize verbal villains and maladaptive complaints, as well as practice active listening skills.

A fellowship followed the discussion. The attendees had fun participating in various collaborative activities. Raffle prizes were also given to lucky winners.

Vice Chancellor for Administration Asst. Prof. Dr. Farisal Ungkakay–Bagsit graced the afternoon activity. Bagsit, a faculty member of CFOS, lauded and acknowledged CFOS’s excellent accomplishment this year. (Written by LB Gallos/CFOS)
