The youngest team in the Philippines Football League (PFL) just notched their first-ever professional win against the veteran and more experienced Mendiola FC, 2-0.

Philippine collegiate football stars Jarvey Gayoso and Matthew Custodio made sure that their team would be one of the toughest squads despite being the youngest in the tourney after converting on late goals to give them a 2-0 edge.

Gayoso’s goal came in at the 72nd minute after Carlo Dorin fired an on-point long cross pass which was perfectly headed for the first score of the match.

Eight minutes after the Gayoso header, Custodio doubled the lead with a follow-up strike after Mar Diano’s miss in a close-range goal attempt.

“We had to go to the bench at the end and mix some things up because for our development players, we need to show them how to win games as well,” said Azkals coach Scott Cooper.

After losses from powerhouse teams United City FC and the Kaya FC-Iloilo, the Azkals Development team is slowly gaining their stride in the big boys’ league and are ecstatic with their first win in the tourney.

With the victory, Azkals will register three points up their resume and the losing Mendiola squad are still at the bottom of the standings with 0 points.
