Canelo Alvarez’s highly-anticipated boxing comeback will finally take place on May 4, 2024, after the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) announced that he will be fighting fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia.
A highlight of the Cinco de Mayo weekend, both Mexicans will meet inside the ring at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Alvarez will be attempting another successful title defense of his super-middleweight belts. Despite entering the fight as the favored star to win the clash, the pound-for-pound king contender can’t take Munguia lightly heading to war.
Munguia, an undefeated boxer who is known for his aggression and stiff jabs, once held the WBO junior middleweight belt for two years.
His last fight was a one-sided demolition of John Ryder whom he knocked out in the ninth round for the WBC silver super middleweight trophy.
Munguia has yet to face a top-caliber fighter like Alvarez and he is currently preparing for the biggest fight of his career.
On the other hand, Alvarez and his camp were looking to lure David Benavidez to a fight deal but after pay-per-view shares and monetary splits were raised, the negotiations quickly fell off and evaporated.
It was what the fight fans wanted. Benavidez, his no.1 contender for his belts, going up against Alvarez in what was tagged to be the fight of the year.
Now that the Benavidez fight is out in their path, Alvarez and his camp are looking to extend his title defense streak against Munguia and are hoping to maintain the WBC, WBO, WBA, and IBF super-middleweight belts.
