Capiz archbishop appointed cardinal by Pope Francis

ROXAS CITY, Capiz – Capiz Archbishop Jose Fuerte Advincula Jr. was appointed as one of the 13 new cardinals of the Catholic Church by Pope Francis.

The announcement was made during the Sunday Angelus at the Vatican.

Advincula was the 9th cardinal from the Philippines after Orlando Quevedo, Luis Antonio Tagle, Gaudencio Rosales, Jose Sanchez, Ricardo Vidal, Jaime Sin, Julio Rosales and Rufino Santos.

At the age of 68, Advincula is eligible to vote for the new pope in the next conclave.

Advincula is also one of the four living Filipino cardinals together with Rosales, Quevedo and Tagle.

Advincula has been at the helm of the Archdiocese of Capiz since January 2012.

He was born in Dumalag, Capiz and ordained as priest in 1976.

In 2001, he was appointed bishop of San Carlos City where he served for 10 years before he was transferred to Capiz as the fourth archbishop of the archdiocese.

Advincula was the vice-chairman Committee on International Eucharistic Congress and the Office on Women of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
