In a significant stride towards advancing the research and development initiatives for Giant Prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), the Mindanao State University (MSU)–Marawi Campus has successfully completed the enhancement of its hatchery complex.

This was achieved through funding support from the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).

The upgraded facility situated at the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences of MSU was inaugurated on March 1, 2024. Present during the ceremony were Engr. Wilmar Lastimosa and Engr. Joseph Saluta of the DOST-PCAARRD Institution Development Division (IDD) as well as  Dr. Adelaida Calpe, Director of the DOST-PCAARRD Inland Aquatic Resources Research Development (IARRD), and staff Geraldin Mae Olaer and Janet Jane  Valguna.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was conducted with officials from MSU-Marawi; Dr. Fema M. Abamo, Vice Chancellor for Research, Extension, and Development; Dr. Amerkhan G. Cabaro, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; Engr. Rasid M. Paca, Executive Vice President; Dr. Zubaida U. Basiao, MSU Marawi Research and Development Leader; and Dr. Ma-an M. The project was made possible through the Facilities Development for the National Agriculture, Aquatic and Resources Research and Development Network (NAARRDN), a program initiated by DOST-PCAARRD-IDD. It aims to provide financial assistance to research and development partners in the region, facilitating the modernization of their facilities and equipment to ensure the efficient delivery of R&D outputs.

In 2023, DOST-PCAARRD allocated close to P130 million for this program emphasize the Council’s commitment to fostering advancements in the AANR sector. (Joseph Saluta and Jesselle Laranas, DOST-PCAARRD S&T Media Services)
