DTI leads region-wide bamboo planting in Western Visayas

In celebration of World Bamboo Day and Philippine Bamboo Month, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region VI spearheaded a region-wide bamboo planting initiative on Sept. 18, 2024.

The event, held in collaboration with government agencies, Provincial Bamboo Development Councils, and non-government organizations, aimed to promote the sustainable use of bamboo while fostering environmental conservation across Western Visayas.

This year’s theme, “Buhay-Kawayan: Haligi ng Industriya’t Kalikasan, Pag-asa sa Kinabukasan,” underscores the region’s commitment to bamboo as both an economic driver and an ecological resource.

Participants gathered in various locations across the region, including San Remigio in Antique, Ibajay in Aklan, and Alimodian in Iloilo.

Similar planting activities were also held in Maayon, Capiz, while Negros Occidental and Guimaras are set to follow on Sept. 20 and 24, respectively.

“Bamboo is not just a plant; it’s a promise for a greener, more sustainable future,” said DTI Region VI Regional Director Rachel Nufable.

“This initiative aligns perfectly with our goal to boost local industries while preserving our natural resources.”

The DTI has identified the bamboo industry as a priority for development, with a focus on harnessing the material’s export potential.

Engineered bamboo products are a growing market, particularly in Asian countries, offering opportunities for poverty alleviation and economic growth.

The Provincial Bamboo Development Councils shared their excitement about the initiative.

“This not only contributes to environmental conservation but also opens up new economic opportunities for our local communities,” they said in a joint statement.

The planting activity brought together representatives from several government agencies, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), alongside the private sector.

Western Visayas’ collaborative bamboo planting initiative reflects the region’s dedication to creating a greener future, blending economic development with environmental responsibility.
