Engr. Bernan Certeza, who is turning 80 on March 5, 2021, has set himself the target of swimming 100 laps in a 25-meter pool without flippers or hand paddles in about 85 minutes on his birthday.
Certeza is doing the challenge dubbed Swim for a Dream to raise funds for orphans at SOS Children’s Village Iloilo, a child welfare organization in Zarraga, Iloilo that is currently taking care of 115 orphaned children and young people from all over Western Visayas.
As member of the organization’s committee and long-time donor himself, Certeza is inviting friends, donors and all those who have the means to pledge and donate.
“I will be turning 80 years old this coming March 5, and I had an idea which just popped out in my mind and it happened about six months ago wherein I would swim 100 laps in a 25-meter pool (on my birthday). I would greatly appreciate it if you would pledge, and if successful, please comply your pledge,” Certeza said.
Mr. Felix Guilaran Jr., Director of SOS Children’s Village Iloilo, admitted the pandemic-induced economic decline in the country has negatively affected the organization’s fundraising efforts.
“Since SOS is struggling of raising funds during the pandemic, Engr. Certeza will custom to celebrate his birthday to fund raise for SOS children. We are inviting you pledge and donate to SOS should he accomplish this feat. He is a very dedicated person and has a good heart to support children,” Guilaran said.
“We encourage you to reach out in compassion, to really be generous, and join Mr. Certeza, our good friend, in this noble endeavour,” said Msgr. Meliton Oso, Chairperson of SOS Children’s Village Committee.
The swim will be aired via Facebook live at SOS Children’s Village Iloilo’s page on March 5, 4 pm.
Interested donors may check the said Facebook page for ways on how to pledge.
