Around 37 families were left homeless after a fire broke out at Brgy. Gen. Hughes in City Proper on Monday afternoon.

The fire, which started past 3 p.m., gobbled up 24 houses and partially damaged four more, according to City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC).

A total of 166 individuals were affected by the fire, the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) reported.

The affected individuals are currently staying in San Pedro National High School at City Proper district.

The Philippine Red Cross Iloilo Chapter has provided them with hot meals, toys, and clothes.

Mayor Jerry Treñas urged Ilonggos to be vigilant following the fire incident in Gen. Hughes which ironically happened just on the second day of the Fire Prevention Month.

“Ironically, we are celebrating the Fire Prevention Month but this untoward incident happened. This will serve as a reminder for us all,” he said.

“I am advising our beloved Ilonggos to be vigilant, be knowledgeable and be more aware to keep ourselves and our family safe,” he furthered.
